Local Facilities and Activities
In the Northern Rivers region 4 major rivers empty into the Pacific Ocean. Needless to say deep sea, beach, and estuary fishing are major draw cards to the area.
Here are some suggestions on how to make the most of your holiday.
In Broadwater:
- The local boat ramp is 2 minutes drive to put your boat in
- Fishing
- Water Skiing
- Canoeing / Kayaking
- Bring the bikes for a day of pedaling
- Take a nice morning stroll along Broadwater’s own secluded beach
- Then picnic at the BBQ area in Broadwater National Park
- Bush walking
- Bowling Club
- Melba’s restaurant has an excellent reputation winning awards for home cooking. Open Wednesday through to Sunday for breakfast through to lunch with an ideal setting on the veranda overlooking an English type garden (highly recommended)
- Evening Dining is at the Commercial Hotel and the Bowls club for a good hearty meal
- BP Service Station has all takeaways under control
- Built around the historic sugar mill founded in 1881 Broadwater is an interesting area for history lovers
- Or just relax with your favourite champagne and nibbles back at the tourist park
Surrounding areas:
Evans Head
- Dog Friendly beach. Off leash as long as dog is controlled by owner
- Evans Head is famous for it’s fishing and prawning industry
- 17th to 24th July 2009 Evans Head Fishing Classic
- 4x WD enthusiasts can access the beach just north of Evans and drive for approx 30 kms along the beach towards Ballina
- Swimming Main Beach is a patrolled beach in season. River beach for safe, shallow swimming all year around
- Take a surf lesson or two
- Longboard invitational happens every October long weekend for young and old
- Golf Woodburn-Evans Head Golf Club, a nine hole course with tree lined fairways is half way between the two towns
- Superb eateries ranging from clubs to the trendy little cafes
- The Great Eastern Fly-in is held at Evans Head airport in December
Woodburn
- Pretty riverside town for a travellers rest
- Woodburn to Wardell Bridge to Bridge Ski Race happens in March
- Woodburn Orchid Show is held in September
Alstonville
A quaint town in a beautiful setting with an interesting main street to explore with it’s cafés, shops and prominent hotel.
- Amaze ‘n’ Place - Great for the kids to get lost in the amazing maze and the café is highly recommended for its excellent gourmet style food and coffee. Mum and Dad can dine on the veranda and watch the fun.
- House with No Steps is fun for the whole family. Water spray park, playground. Fabulous gift shop and garden nursery. Great café and takeaway. Provides employment and opportunities for over 84 people with disabilities.
